The other day, there was one single envelope in my mailbox, addressed to the parents of "Zane Rice".

hmmm, right address, but--I ripped it open. Inside was a letter encouraging me to attend an informational meeting for the parents of 8th graders who want to get their kids into good colleges. I just had to laugh. How did whatever computer get it so completely wrong? I have a daughter, not a son, who is 22, not 12, and she's just left college.

The same day, I went for a walk. It's quite common in my neighborhood to see abandoned grocery carts, particularly from the local Mexican market. People without cars simply push the cart the four or five blocks and then leave it on the curb. This is so prevalent that Mi Pueblo sends a truck around every other week to pick up their distinctive red grocery carts. But the one outside my building was the more typical silver with blue accents--from Walmart. I admit, I stared in surprise. The nearest Walmart is over 40 miles away--did someone actually walk from the next county along the freeway with a grocery cart? I quite entertained myself on the walk thinking up scenarios on how it got there!

Here's my wee rant for the week. We went to Applebees on Monday for dinner and our waitress was named Ivorey. Oh, sweetie, I feel for you. Did your parents think it made the ordinary Ivory more interesting to add in the extra E? So no one on Earth will every spell your name correctly? At least her name was easy to figure out phonetically.

I work in a baby nursery and very, very often what the parent tells us is the baby's name is spelled so oddly that the child has no chance of ever having teachers and employers getting his name right. We nurses have to practice the baby's name to get it right so we don't upset the parents by pronouncing it incorrectly when referring to the infant. Personally, I love unusual names. I like that my parents gave me an uncommon first name, and I did so for my daughter, as well. But figure out the rules of spelling first so your kid doesn't go through life constantly correcting the pronunciation. My daughter's name is actually easy to pronounce--De-mel-za, and yet people constantly want to put the Z first and the D fifth. Shrugs.

I binged the second season of Broadchurch in the last couple days. I'd seen the first three eps when it originally aired, and for some reason, lost the focus and forgot about it. Watching five eps in three days really ramped my interest for season three, and I watched the premiere today. Hardy now lives in Broadchurch and has been working with Ellie for some time. Huh? At the end of season two, he was leaving, as if permanently. I hope there is an explanation of how he returned, along with his daughter!
